Our heritage
The roots of the Hellenic Community of Alberton trace back to the early 1940s, when Hellenic pioneers first established themselves as merchants and entrepreneurs in the region. Driven by a shared vision to preserve their cultural heritage, support one another, and upgrade local education, the community formally established itself as a legally constituted entity in the early 1960s.
Through decades of collective dedication and fund-raising efforts, the community built a permanent foundation in New Redruth. The spacious community hall opened its doors in December 1967, quickly becoming a versatile hub for public functions and local gatherings. This was followed by the opening of the Greek Orthodox Church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, in March 1972. Today, this vibrant precinct stands as a testament to generations of unity, continuing to serve both the Hellenic community and the broader public with pride.
